Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Hands Over 120- Meter Borehole with Solar Powered to Makunganya Community and TFS in Morogoro

Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited (MLTL) has officially handed over a 120-metre borehole equipped with a solar-powered water system to the residents of Makunganya and the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS) in Morogoro, marking a significant milestone in addressing longstanding water challenges in the area.
The intervention comes at a time when access to clean and reliable water has been a major concern for residents, particularly women, who previously travelled approximately 10 kilometres in search of water, often sacrificing valuable time that could otherwise be dedicated to household responsibilities and economic activities.
The facility will also support TFS in its forestry conservation efforts, particularly the irrigation of tree seedlings raised for planting in various locations.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mr. David Mayunga, Agronomy Director at Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited, highlighted the importance of the project in improving water access for both the surrounding community and forestry activities.
Mr. Mohamed Khamis Msalu, Head of the Seed Production Unit, Morogoro, expressed appreciation to Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco for the investment, noting that the water facility would significantly support the irrigation of tree seedlings. He further acknowledged MLTL as a valued stakeholder in forestry initiatives and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in promoting sustainable environmental management.
A representative of the community expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco, particularly highlighting the positive impact the project will have on women and mothers.
“On behalf of the community, we sincerely thank the leadership of Mkwawa for providing us with this borehole. This support means so much to us, especially women. During childbirth and other critical moments, access to water has been a serious challenge. We have endured many difficulties, but this intervention has brought us great relief. May God bless Mkwawa abundantly for remembering us and responding to our needs,” she said.
The project reflects Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited’s continued commitment to improving access to essential services, strengthening stakeholder partnerships and supporting environmental sustainability in the communities where it operates.
Through initiatives such as this, MLTL continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating shared value by addressing community priorities while supporting sustainable natural resource management.
