As a leading merchant and processor of tobacco in Tanzania, Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited recognize the importance of protecting the environment through management of our own operations while fostering sustainable agricultural practices. This Environmental Policy outlines our commitment to minimising our ecological footprint, promoting sustainable farming, and preserving natural resources for future generations.
This policy applies to all directors, employees and contractors associated with Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited.

Sustainable Sourcing
Source agricultural products from suppliers adhering to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), including crop rotation, reduced chemical usage, and conservation tillage.
Source other products from suppliers who follow environmental best practice as laid out in our Supplier Code of Conduct.
Resource Efficiency
Optimize water usage in our operations through recycling and efficient water use.
Optimize our logistics and processing operations to reduce energy consumption.
Reduce energy consumption by adopting renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies.
Implement waste reduction strategies, including reusing or repurposing processing by- products and promoting composting.
Ensure all waste from company operations is segregated and disposed of in line with applicable legal requirements.
Climate Action
Support climate-resilient agriculture by providing farmers with access to improved seeds and training on climate-smart techniques.
Promote and support the development and use of energy-efficient curing barns and curing techniques.
Monitor, mitigate and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our operations, including transportation and processing facilities.
Deforestation, Biodiversity and Soil Health
Support industry afforestation and reforestation initiatives.
Work with communities in the development of Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) to provide sustainable wood resources, enhance biodiversity and sequester carbon.
Work with farmers to ensure sustainable wood sources for tobacco curing through wood traceability systems, from sustainably managed forests.
Train farmers on sustainable soil management practices, including the use of organic manure, crop diversification and continuous row cropping.
Train farmers on prevention of water pollution from agricultural runoff with responsible land- use and Good Agricultural Practices.
Ensure runoff and discharge from all company operations do not impact rivers and biodiversity.
Community Engagement and Training
Collaborate with stakeholders, communities and farmers to raise awareness of sustainable farming practices.
Provide capacity-building programs for communities and farmers to enhance productivity while preserving natural resources.
Partner with local organizations to support conservation efforts.
Continuous Improvement and Monitoring
We will establish measurable environmental performance goals and continuously improve our environmental management system through:
Development of a baseline for all emissions in 2025.
Conduct materiality assessments to identify key measurables in 2025.
Regular environmental impact assessments
Periodic internal and external audits
Adoption of new technologies and best practices for sustainability
We will comply with all national and international environmental regulations in consideration of relevant international agreements, principles, and standards.
