Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Expands Access to Clean and Safe Water in Chunya

On 29 th October 2025, Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited launched a community water access project aimed at improving access to safe and reliable water for communities across 16 villages where we operate in Chunya District, Mbeya Region.

Through regular interaction with farmers and local stakeholders, Mkwawa recognized that limited access to reliable water was affecting households and placing a significant burden on women and families, while also constraining the well-being and development of the wider community.

Access to safe and reliable water is essential to healthy households, productive communities, and sustainable development. In many of the targeted communities, residents have historically had to travel considerable distances to access water, creating additional challenges for women and families who often carry a significant responsibility for household water collection.

The project is intended to reduce the distance and time spent searching for water, while supporting improved hygiene, household well-being, and community resilience.

The initiative also reflects Mkwawa's commitment to understanding the needs of the communities in which it operates and developing practical interventions that respond to locally identified priorities.

By investing in water infrastructure, Mkwawa is not only addressing an immediate community need but also supporting opportunities for families to devote more time to productive activities, education, and other priorities.
